Sony has launched its Xperia XZ2 Premium smartphone, which includes a larger and brighter display, more memory, dual main cameras with improved low-light capabilities and a more powerful battery than the year-old Xperia XZ Premium model it replaces.
The Xperia XZ2 Premium handset was unveiled by Sony less than a week after the company began taking preorders for two other models, the Xperia XZ2 and the Xperia XZ2 Compact smartphones.
The Xperia XZ2 Premium, Sony’s latest flagship model, gets a new 5.8-inch 4K HDR display (2,1600-by-3,840 resolution), 6GB of memory, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, a 3,540mAh battery, and a 19-megapixel color Motion Eye camera and an adjacent 12-megapixel black and white camera.
Last year’s Xperia XZ Premium featured a smaller 5.46-inch display with the same resolution, only 4GB of memory, a slower Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, a smaller 3,230mAh battery and only a single 19-megapixel main camera.
The Xperia XZ2 Premium is slated to be available globally in the summer of 2018, but pricing has not yet been announced.
The handset also features a fingerprint sensor for security, 64GB of internal storage, a microSDXC slot for expandable storage, a 13-megapixel selfie camera, 4K video and ultra-slow-motion capabilities. The phone will run on Android 8.0 Oreo.
For durability, both sides of the glass and metal phone are covered with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, while the handset also meets IP65 and IP 68 standards for water, dust, dirt, grease and temperature resistance.
The XZ2 Premium phone is 6.2 inches tall, 3.1 inches wide and 0.5 inches thick, and it weighs 8.32 ounces. It will be available in Chrome Black or Chrome Silver colors.
The 4G LTE handset will work with GSM cellular networks and includes WiFi, Bluetooth 5 and near-field communications (NFC) connectivity capabilities.
Because the handset does not feature a built-in headphone jack, the phone comes with a USB Type-C to 3.5mm audio jack adapter.
The Xperia XZ2 Premium is larger and more powerful than its two siblings, the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact handsets, which feature 5.7-inch and 5-inch displays. The Xperia XZ2 is priced at $800, while the XZ2 Compact is priced at $650, so the XZ2 Premium is expected to sell at a higher price.
